Hello everybody and welcome to the first ever issue 8 of the Spirit Spotlight, the write up of the best spirits you can find at The Dial.
This week, I want to talk to you about gold, I love goooooold! That’s an Austin Powers reference for those who don’t stay in and watch films all day, like a normal cultured human. This week the spotlights are focusing on Au Vodka, a vodka that comes in a gold bottle, is filtered through gold, and probably has an unhealthy obsession with turning in gold for cash.
So let’s start with that name, if you look closely at the bottle you will see that it is actually called Au79. You scientists out there in the real world probably already know that Au79 is the name given to gold on the periodic table. What you might not know is gold is one of the first three elements to man, along with gold and silver. Cool eh? So technically, it’s called gold vodka, right?
You see, Au recognises that gold is something special to mankind. For as long as it has been known, Gold has become used for a monetary system, a symbol of success, expensive jewellery and it can, if wanted, be used to filter spirits.
Bur first, lets dial it back. Au vodka uses grain grown in the lion heart of the English countryside and blended with springwater. It’s great to see a vodka with English heritage have as much care given to it as this does. Once the ingredients are combined they are distilled five times to deliver a smooth finish and to bring out a slightly citrus taste. The final step for this vodka is to filter it. As is tradition, it is filtered through charcoal, but then it is blasted through a high pressure filter chamber containing gold, to further remove any impurities that would hamper the final taste. Gold’s mineral properties further enhance the smoothness of the final product, and Au is one of the only spirits in the world to use this method.
So Au loves gold, it uses gold to create the final vodka, and it is presented in a wealthy looking gold bottle that has handmade pewter labels, individually attached by hand one at a time. There is a lot of love that has gone into this vodka, and you should try it in its purest form in a vodka martini:
- 50ml Au Vodka to a boston glass full of ice
- Pour in 15ml vermouth
- Stir well for one minute
- Double strain into a martini glass and garnish with an olive
- Put on a suit and act like James Bond (This isn’t his Vesper Martini, but you will still look cool)
However, if like me, you have a sweet tooth, give this one a go, it’s recommended by Au themselves!
- Add 50ml of Au vodka to a shaker full of ice
- Pour in 25ml of lemon juice
- Add 50ml pomegranate juice
- Finish with 15ml of sugar syrup
- Shake well and strain over ice into a glass
- Top up with lemonade and garnish with a sprig of mint and a lemon wedge.
So next time you’re looking at your unused gold jewellery, don’t trade it in, it might be worthwhile in the future. For smooth tasting vodka, look for the gold bottle, at The Dial.
